    I won’t lie, I have favourites.

To me cycling is preferable for anything under 20/30 km. My city has a metro and it’s my second option for this type of distance but I’ve had multiple issues with it in the past and always come back to cycling for short distances. It’s never crowded and there’s no ticket inspectors.

Then for medium distances, I can cycle about 100 km but I prefer suburban rail as they allow me to bring my bike and continue from a station, for a reasonable price. The other option are suburban buses, that often also take bikes, but are overcrowded.

Unfortunately I hate the intercity trains here, managed by VIA Rail, as they are super expensive last minute, and won’t take bikes.

As for coaches, their network and services are steadily shrinking throughout the years, with reduced departures. Some will take bikes if they are in a box, and for a fee.

Taxis/ride sharing/Uber/Lyft, I hate these things. They perpetuate car dependency and it’s just paying someone to use a car.

And I’m undecided about micro transit like e-scooters. I don’t like them dangerously zigzagging around pedestrians and/or slower cyclists.

In essence, because transit is pretty bad here, I heavily prefer active transportation, but I will use public and private transit any time if it means to avoid using a car.

    Anything but a fucking car.

We are finally getting some displays here that will tell you how long the wait is for the 2 bus lines that arrive once an hour.

    It’s something.

KC has a lot of dedicated bike lanes with physical barriers, so it’s safer here than some places, but a lot of the riding is in open streets unfortunately. Yes.

My city has greatly expanded the shared bike network, and now I can easily zip between stations.

Bikes are private transportation. Although the idea of a guy with a biking route and having people hop onto the pegs on his back wheel as a form of public transportation is hilarious to me.

I ride the bus for work, i like it since i don’t have yo pay for parking. But they got new busses and all the seats are hard plastic. At least it doesn’t leak when it rains anymore.

Which is fine if you have working public transport. People outside the city centers don’t.

EDIT: Just because you dislike facts that contradict your message, it does not make them less true.

Depends on the location, doesn’t it? There are plenty of well serviced suburbs around the world.

Seriously depends on what you consider “well serviced”. If “a bus every two hours” is well serviced for you, fine.

There are also plenty of suburbs around the world which are well serviced by any definition.

I’m not here to argue that public transport is ideal for everyone, but that it can work great even outside city centres. And if public transport sucks where you are, it’s not because it’s impossible to have good public transport in the suburbs. If someone tells you it’s impossible outside city centres, they either don’t know or are lying.

Where i’m from we only have a concept of a working public transport, but hey, we still can appreciate the good stuff that we could never have.
