  • Explanation: The French MAS-36 rifle had a unique system for storing the bayonet, wherein the bayonet is simply reversed and inserted beneath the barrel and ‘locked’ in for storage. Efficient use of space!

However, a handful of goofing-off French infantrymen found out that the same system could be used to ‘lock’ two rifles together, and that doing so blocked the release button… making both rifles unusable without being disassembled.

Great work, GI Pierre! We salute your ingenuity in breaking guns designed to be impossible for any ordinary moron to break! o7

  • Explanation: A bit inaccurate in the details - Roman city traffic was godawful. Julius Caesar laid down restrictions on when carts could enter the city of Rome to cut down on the grotesque amount of traffic, and there was a dizzying array of traffic laws and one-way streets in the convoluted metropolis that was Rome. Or, in the words of the Roman poet Juvenal…

Who but the wealthy get sleep in Rome? There lies the root of the disorder. The crossing of wagons in the narrow winding streets, the slanging of drovers when brought to a stand, would make sleep impossible for a [Emperor] Drusus - or a sea-calf.

Newly-patched tunics are torn in two; up comes a huge log swaying on a wagon, and then a second dray carrying a whole pine-tree, towering aloft and threatening the people. For if that axle with its load of Ligurian marble breaks down, and pours its spilt contents on to the crowd, what is left of their bodies? Who can identify the limbs, who the bones? The poor man’s crushed corpse disappears, just like his soul.

  • Moving to PieFed OK, but why everything to the one instance? Didn’t we learn anything from having everything @world?

It would be one thing if this were several people moving their comms to Piefed.social, but it’s literally just me. Piefed.social is still small, I don’t think me moving is going to cause it to centralize, especially considering that there are other major Piefed instances already extant.

Decentralization should be done by different people and groups choosing different instances, but all of us federating with each other and participating in each other’s comms; not in expecting one person to spread themselves over half-a-dozen different instances.
