I’d like to set up three or four cameras on the exterior of my house, but I’m not sure where to start with this project. Ideally, these cameras would get power over Ethernet and record to a hard drive in my house that I could access remotely with a decent user interface. If the system could notify me when movement is detected that would be ideal as well. I don’t like the idea of using a Google, Amazon, or similar product because I don’t want to pay a subscription and I want to have control of the footage. What are you using that more or less accomplishes what I’ve described?
I use Unifi Protect for local NVR using a mix of Unifi and Reolink cameras. I put everything through scrypted so I get HKSV cloud backup of events. I normally view footage through Apple Home because it is a smooth experience.
I’ve been using and recommending Unifi Protect for friends. It’s self-hosted and your video data is saved locally. The cameras require the Unifi Protect NVR or Cloud Key. For friends that are not overly technical, I’ve found it’s quite easy for them to understand and use, while avoiding subscriptions.
I’m not surveilling myself. But if I were to do it, I’d probably use Frigate. And some camera that doesn’t talk to the cloud. These projects (or the Home Assistant community) probably have some recommendations for specific cameras.
Frigate + Amcrest PoE cameras (blocked from internet) + Unraid + a cheap Coral TPU. Can run everything in docker, or HA’s ready to go VM image.
many years ago, i used a linux software called “motion” to use a v4l webcam to capture when my carnivorous plants or something near them moves. it worked very well. hope it helps. good luck.
Thank you. That sounds like it was a cool project.
I have a full reolink 8 camera peo system connected to a reolink NVR with 4tb of storage. No monthly fees, video stored locally, and it can be accessed remotely using the reolink app on my phone. It records 24/7 and I get about 10 days worth of video stored before things overwrite. Also it can be set to alert when it detects motion and will show motion activation when playing back video.
Reolink poe cams, recording to Shinobi running on Unraid but live view feeds come from Home Assistant dash. Reolink cams and home assistant have been awesome but considering moving recording from Shinobi to Frigate
