I know the movies retconned this badly, but measuring the “speed” of a hyperspace capable ship with distance makes a lot of sense…

At the direct “normal” space distances these ships travel, on conventional drives, going from one galaxy to the next would take more than a human lifetime. The maximum velocity of the ship makes a, well let’s not say negligible, but rather immaterial, difference in the time it takes for the ship to arrive. A hyperspace drive effectively brings two points in space closer together. The “faster” the drive is, the closer it brings those two points, and thus the MF’s impressive run is a measure of distance instead of speed.

  • AI is going to damage their perception of reality. I got snagged by some AI bait about great white sharks (I’m a bit of a shark nerd). The article had AI generated images of great white sharks, captioned as *great white sharks in blank scenario". None of the sharks were actually Great Whites, they were tiger and bull sharks stretched and stitched together to make what ChatGPT thinks a great white looks like. The sharks were all in situations that were either physically impossible, or behaviorally wrong for great white sharks. Articles like that are dangerous, and they are going to warp perception about what a shark looks like, and what a shark does. If you think it’s harmless, imagine a similar article about venomous snakes, or edible mushrooms, where all the identification images are AI generated.

That great. All we need is a ton of removable bollards installed in and around every location where people will congregate on foot. Easy, that’s just every mall, convention hall, farmers market, community festival, school, workplace, sports venue, religious institution, government office, hospital…

Driving trucks through crowds is the new 9/11. That’s what they’re saying.

Hijacking an airplane is a lot harder now, but any jackass with a credit card can rent a yank-tank and drive it into a pedestrian rich environment. That’s a much larger attack surface, and we can’t reasonably defend from it without oppressive surveillance and other personal freedom restrictions.
