I only learned very recently that general strikes are illegal in the US because someone pointed it out to me.

Striking itself isn’t illegal (usually, some jurisdictions have made it illegal for “certain industries” to strike), but labor unions are not allowed to strike in solidarity with another union.

Anyway, I brought this up as an explanation of why established labor unions aren’t involved in any general strike, and why they will never be.

Taft-Hartley made general strikes illegal. Organized labor isn’t going to openly participate in this.

Other people have pointed out, and I will echo: there are plenty of people who have not yet been moved to take any action, and a “symbolic” action is something as opposed to nothing. People who decide to take this symbolic action are going to be more easily moved to take more directly effective action in the future.

Building a critical mass takes time. Providing people with easy opportunities to experience involvement now will increase the number of people willing to take on greater risks later.

This is why we don’t gatekeep resistance.

What is the point of a card game where whoever goes first wins because they can just continue to play more cards until they win?

My son taught me to play MTG once. Super basic cards, nothing crazy. Not only could I not keep up with what my cards did, all of the “this effect is in play, but except not this card, because of this other effect, and then there’s a couple other effects going on, too.” I couldn’t be made to care enough to figure that out every time.

This is painfully accurate, And I don’t even play any of those card games.
