I got charged for like 3-6 months of DoorDash premium. And that’s without having a DoorDash account. Apparently my GF used my card for one order, and managed to accidentally sign up for a subscription which she never used. So the account not in my name, not on my phone, and not attached to my email. I was able to call them though, and they “generously” refunded 2 months.

Seriously fuck DoorDash.

You never really know, it’s plausible. But I doubt it. It doesn’t seem any more likely now than it did in 2016.

Ceasefire in Gaza for a minimum of 6 weeks (if I understood the news correctly) is huge. That conflict might be close to over if we’re lucky.

Wilhelm scream. It’s in everything. It’s memorable in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but it’s in Soul Plane too.

I’ve watched far too many hours of sitcoms, because I’m recognizing a specific laugh that gets re-used over and over. It’s by far the worst on How I Met Your Mother (where I first noticed it). They’ll repeat the same laugh 2-3 times within the same episode. It’s a specific high-pitched laugh that almost sounds like the person is inhaling while laughing rather than exhaling. HIMYM doesn’t use a live audience so they re-use the same laughs for the entire run of the show.

USB micro (not sure if you’re getting micro confused with mini, but doesn’t really matter) only supported data transfer, not video transfer (like HDMI). Some USB-C ports are data only, but it theoretically supports more than USB micro was ever capable of.

For example you can buy a USB-C to HDMI cable for a few dollars, which could theoretically plug your phone directly into your TV (if your phone supports that). But a USB micro to HDMI cable was called an “MHL adapter” and was expensive and only worked on specific MHL capable phones like this one. It has a separate box that requires its own power cord in order to work, it’s not just a simple cable. USB-C should, in theory, eliminate the need for such a thing.

Is the goal to create a sentient being, or to create something that seems sentient? How would you even tell the difference (assuming it could pass any test a normal human could)?

I heard Facebook is spent tons of money to combat election misinformation in 2016 and 2020 and I heard the same story again in 2024. The problem is solved right?

As a depressed 16 year old boy I received a self help book from my mother. I was offended. Never opened the book. Like in hindsight I guess she thought I needed help and the book would somehow do that, but all I saw was that my mother thought something was wrong with me.

AI is just a plagiarism machine with thousands of copyrighted materials that “trained” it, which they paid nothing for.

I spent a few minutes playing ‘spot the difference’ here’s what I’ve got:

• Line from Portland to Salt Lake City is gone.
• Line that goes through Southern Montana and Southern North Dakota is gone.
• Line connected Nashville to Louisville is gone.

That’s about it? That doesn’t seem like that much. First picture is full of place names and has dotted lines for “connected motorcoach services” that make it seem a lot fuller.

That’s what the scene implies. The whole scene makes no sense after the backstory that the prequels added.

The idea of the scene is that we, the viewer, have no idea what the force is yet. Just like character who learns the hard way. Because this is the first Star Wars movie and they haven’t even started calling it Episode 4 yet.

One thing about Star Wars that is similar to westerns the film genre, but almost reversed, is that the universe is always in constant decline. Things are always worse than the generation before. So holding onto last generation’s tech is a benefit.

Where in a typical western it’s about the new generation replacing the old, the new tech replacing the old. A new railroad is replacing the horse. Star Wars exists in a place where weapons and armor can last generations.

Seems like it would vary based on how close to Naboo you were. The protocol droids like C3PO seem to be common everywhere, while R2D2 seems to be the rarer of the two, especially after the end of the Clone Wars.

We’ve seen droids are valuable, worth reprogramming, and last an incredibly long time. I guess they are better used elsewhere? Yet uncle Owen, a simple moisture farmer, can afford multiple of them seemingly on a whim.

Also the main place we are talking about there not being enough cameras is warships which lack space. I don’t think battleships have anything like that today. Why doesn’t the fully constructed Death Star in A New Hope have a fully monitored camera system? No idea. Perhaps Galen Erso managed to include that major oversight in his design. Along with the many other problems with the first Death Star like the vent shaft that destroys the whole thing.

It’s 70’s technology. They have a couple cameras in prime spots, but no one reviews them unless there’s a reason to. No one is watching them live.

Lack of successful alternatives? It’s easy to find flaws with capitalism but every other system has its share of problems too.
