  • When it’s actual news, I’ll hear about it regardless.

I’m not going to perseverate over every headline, I have a life to live. The media is actively trying to piss us off, they’ll skew and distort and all but fabricate to keep us angry and engaged.

I’m not doing it. I can’t recall a single time in my life that keeping up to date up to the hour has actually improved anything for me. Sitting around just knowing stuff is happening isn’t going to change my life for the better.

I live in a safe republican state and a leans Republican district. I could send a letter to my senator, call my representative, spend hours of my time just worried about something, and still, they’ll vote how the party wants them to. Being informed and doing the things I’m supposed to do won’t change anything.

I occasionally run a lathe at work. The big CNC one says it will do 10,000 rpm

If you ever run it that fast, the jaws will start to separate and the part will come flying out at Mach 4, bounce around the inside of the machine for several minutes, destroying the chuck, all the tooling, and the chip conveyor in the process.

Another fun fact, these machines go from 5000 rpm (the fastest you’re assuredly safe to run it) to 10 at the snap of a finger and back up again. All of that energy has to go somewhere. So there’s a heat coil, pretty much identical to the one in your oven, that takes all that extra energy. It doesn’t normally get all that hot, but if you’re running a lot of parts with a lot of diameter changes, it can get hot enough to glow.

We also didn’t make the model T suggest replacing the engine when the oil light comes on. Cars, as it happens, aren’t that great at self diagnosis, despite that technology being far simpler and further along than generative models are. I don’t trust the model to tell me what temperature to bake a cake at, I’m sure at hell not going to trust it with medical information. Googling symptoms was risky at best before. It’s a horror show now.

  • Extrusion is a little different but similar. It would be easy to confuse the two.

Extrusion is forcing material through a die to get a shape. There’s a play dough toy that is effectively a play dough extruder. You put the dough in the hopper, press a lever, and you get a star or whatever.

The surface finish you get kinda depends on the material, it will feel very smooth but won’t be nearly as smooth under a microscope as this. If you’re in to 3D printers, the aluminum arms are generally made of 80/20 T slot, which is an extruded material. Also like, all dry pasta is made this way.

Drawing is stretching the material. You’re pulling it through the die rather than pushing it, and getting a shape, and the act of stretching it out makes it incredibly smooth and can yield a stronger product.

This is also how record stylus needles are made. And frequently brass tubes. It’s not done through dies, but Chinese noodles are made in a similar process, constantly stretching until they’re the desired size.

Fun fact, that event is easily searchable.

Either your memory of the event is falling, or you’re lying.

It was a racial justice protest.

Nobody died. One man with life threatening injuries went to a different hospital and no further news was reported on that.

Nobody was charged with manslaughter, the most serious charge was disorderly conduct.

  • First of all, Lemmy has a lot of users for whom English is a second language. So maybe don’t be a jackass about correcting grammar.

Secondly, in case you happen to be in that group of people ‘largest media company’ in this context applies to their reach, and not to their actual size. They are ‘large’ because they have a large audience, generate a lot of revenue, and are worth a lot of money. LMG also comprises 10 different YouTube channels with maybe 10 billion views between them.

  • I used to love using a rowing machine.

After having lost a significant amount of weight, I no longer have the necessary padding in my ass and sitting on one, especially leaning back is excruciating due to a common problem among obese people. My tail bone is permanently fucked.

Never get fat friends. Some things your body recovers from as you lose weight, some things you carry forever.
