I second that. Even my lower-midrange laptop from 3 years ago (8GB RAM, Integrated AMD GPU) can run a few of the smaller LLMs, and it’s true that you don’t even need a GPU as they can run in RAM. And depending on how much RAM you have and what GPU, you might find models performing better in RAM instead of on the GPU. Just keep in mind that when a model says, for example, 8GB Memory required, if you have 8GB RAM, you can’t run it cuz you also have your operating system and other applications running. If you have 8GB video memory on your GPU though, you should be golden (I think).
I completely forgot about the Linux Upskill Challenge! I should have mentioned I’ve been running Linux as my desktop operating system for almost 3 years, and I’ve been tinkering with it quite a lot throughout so I’m quite familiar and very comfortable with the command line. I shoukd go through the Linux upskill challenge so I can fill in any knowledge gaps though. Thanks for reminding me!
Similar story, though I was intending to send something kinda inappropriate to someone. I almost sent it to my mum because common contacts pop up when doing a share, so I pressed my mum, but then while moving my finger down I realised my mistake, and just did the best save I could. My finger remained pressed down on screen, essentially holding down the “share with mum” button, while I came up with the solution to hold down the power button until the phone restarted. Halfway through the bootup process, I realised I probably could have just pressed the power button so my phone would go to sleep instead and that would have fixed the issue.

Nvidia is Sauron confirmed.
Yeah, there was a period in time where people were discussing Helium-3 as a source of fuel that we could very easily and efficiently farm on the moon, which was seen as a key step in becoming a space-faring species. Okay, so we know where the fuel is and we can get there, so companies can start using Earth fuel to send helium-3 extraction machines, which can then be used to collect fuel for them to use in further missions and eventually, a small amount of helium-3 will be used to fuel a mission that returns with massive amounts of it, so we have a fuel, and now we can start exploring space even further, with people. It was the clear direction to take.
If AI is just autocorrect on steroids (it is), I wonder if actual good old autocorrect will see any improvements
Safe to say I don’t have a career as an artist, unless it’s abstract art. Still, I was going for more of a penguin-like body intentionally. I didn’t fail at the task, I just found an approach that requires a skill I haven’t trained yet.
I used to have a bottle of water but I drank it, so… bed?
If only. I’m a student living in student accommodation. I can’t set up a NAS because hosting things on the network is against their policy, and I also wouldn’t feel comfortable having that type of hardware in my room. And if electricity bills skyrocket because of me, I’ll be forced to pay them.
What’s a safe place to buy storage online? I’ve seen horror stories of an sd card in a drive enclosure, and modifying the storage to make it appear larger than it is.
Are cheap
Yeah, right. I know they’re cheaper than they were but they can’t be that cheap.
finds a high-speed 2tb m.2 from Kingston (a brand I trust) for £120
I stand corrected.
Polarize the people, controversy is the king! It doesn’t matter if they hate you, if they all say your name!

(Ren - Money Game Part 2)
At 1:38 is the beginning of the infamous “she sells sea shells” part that was spread on social media. To understand the quote, at the very least, start watching here, but I’d still vastly recommend the entire thing.
The quote itself is at the sentence starting at 2:37 -2:48
I’ve just realized there’s an animated series on Youtube, that I’ve had a really hard time (read: impossible) finding anywhere else, and if LEGO (yes, I’m talking about Ninjago) decides to delete these videos from their channels, the OG seasons are nowhere to ve found as far as I can tell. Yes, there are some cartoon streaming services but those are few in number and getting fewer, so I wouldn’t bet on them or any new ones that spring up having that content available in 5-10 years. And that’s worrying. Time to download all 15 seasons and store them somewhere! (oh shit, I don’t have enough space, do I)
Edit: found them on a downloads site from the piracy megathread, but only Seasons 1-11. I’ll get them all soon enough.
Edit 2: The first 11 seasons from that website come up to just over 105GB and I don’t have the space. Do I buy a 256GB USB/ Drive to store this at? I’m scared that I’m getting to the point of becoming a data hoarder. Not too long ago, I didn’t know what I’d do with my single 32GB USB, now I have added a 128GB one, and a 64GB Ventoy usb to the mix, and I still don’t have enough. Wtf?
Wait, when you say Republicans, do you mean the organisation that Americans currently call the Grand Old Party, the GOP, the modern Republican Party? If so, I find it ironic that the party standing for freedom has evolved into the party that shields and encourages racists and criminals.
A lot of minor things:
We’re starting a grpup project in uni this year. 3/8 team members met, 1 couldn’t be there, 2 we found online but didn’t get a response from. The other 2 are a mystery. A large chunk of our grade depends on picking our favourite one of 48 projects, which we can’t do cuz we don’t know half the team, and their interests and skillset. Also, I’m feeling massive impostor syndrome. I wasn’t too serious last year, so now I feel like I don’t know anything (I know quite a bit but not nearly to the level I’d be expected to, in any relevant area).
I’m still having a hard time socialising. Last year, I didn’t do any going out or socialising, even though I was in the perfect environment for it, with flatmates that were going out. This year, flatmates are older, and they’re either in relationships, or just too focused on studying, or they just don’t want to go clubbing necessarily. I have high libido (teen hormones, what can you do) so I want to find a girl but it’s just not going to happen if I don’t go out (and dating apps produced no results so far, I’ve been on them for a year). So what’s the solution? Going out by myself, and looking like a lone weirdo, making approaching girls (did mention I have 0 experience with this) even more difficult?
My flat is a slight upgrade in some areas, and an annoying downgrade in others. It’s an upgrade in storage space within my room. The wardrobe and drawers are more spacious, to the point where I could properly fit all my clothes and didn’t have to think of what to stash under the bed. BUT the drawers were built by a maniac, who left them looking like they were taken straight out of a wacky animation, or something like Hello Neighbour, one goes left and down, the other goes right and down, the remaining is right and up, and they all conflict each other and I have to lift one up to open the other. Also, the extra space in my room has been traded for virtually no space in the kitchen. One and a half cupboards for all my stuff and barely a fridge shelf? At least I got a full freezer shelf.
Also, the sudden onset of a sore throat for seemingly no reason a few hours ago has left me slightly concerned. It may or may not be combined with a slightly stuffy nose.
I’m still trying and failing to get off social media, to get myself to do the right thing immediately, instead of just spending a bunch of time dealing with other stuff, or musing on whether this is the right thing, whether it’s the most efficient way, etc. cuz it’s a waste of time.
And I still can’t fix my sleep schedule. But that’s mainly a lack of discipline and the presence of procrastination.
How slow, because I neved noticed
Trust me, it’s noticeable. Or at least it was for me. Numbers wise, it doesn’t sound like much, but the difference between 0.05s and 0.5s (which are roughly the times I was experiencing) is very noticeable, at least for me. One is done before you’ve even fully lifted the finger off the key, while with the other you’re preparing to press (or maybe you’re already pressing pressing) the next key, by the time you see a reaction.
Your mileage may vary.
Well, I certainly agree that Markdown is a lot more popular. I just wanted to hear your opinion on it.
Not THAT far. But 32GB RAM is getting more common, though I haven’t heard of many people using 64, let alone more than that.
Also, storage is usually not that extreme, though multiple terabytes are also getting more common on the higher end.
Just this month, I upgraded to 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD so it isn’t that extreme for most people.
CPU and GPU - wise, most people aren’t running the best of the best, and there are still plenty of people using 10-series Nvidia GPUs, with most people seemingly using 20-series or 30-series GPUs, (and usually not the best cards for these generations)
